Who Qualifies for Hospice?

To be eligible for Quad County Hospice, a patient must:

• Have a terminal illness diagnosis with a life expectancy of six months or less (as certified by a physician).
• Be receiving palliative care only (focused on symptom relief rather than curative treatment).
• Have a responsible primary caregiver available to assist with care.
• Understand their prognosis and choose hospice care as their preferred option.
• Reside within our service area (Christian, Montgomery, Shelby, Fayette, and Macoupin Counties).
• Have an attending physician who will oversee hospice care.
• Be accepted without regard to race, religion, national origin, disability, diagnosis, lifestyle, or ability to pay.

Volunteer Opportunities

Quad County Hospice offers several rewarding volunteer opportunities for those who wish to support patients, families, and our hospice team. No matter your background or availability, there’s a place for you to help.

Administrative Volunteers:

Prefer to help behind the scenes? Administrative volunteers play a key role in supporting our hospice operations. Tasks may include:

• Making “Care Calls” to check in on patients and families

• Filing and data entry

• Preparing admission packets and mailings

• Writing “Thinking of You” and Thank You cards

• Assisting with general office work

Perfect for: Individuals who enjoy office work, organizing, and offering support in a non-direct patient setting.

Our Patient & Family Volunteers provide companionship, emotional support, and respite care for hospice patients and their loved ones. Visits take place in private homes, assisted living facilities, nursing homes, and hospital inpatient rooms. Ways You Can Help:

• Friendly neighbor visits to reduce loneliness
• Scheduled respite visits to give family caregivers a break
• Reading to patients (Bible, newspaper, letters, etc.)
• Watching TV, playing cards, and engaging in conversations
• Helping with small tasks, such as writing letters or looking at family albums

Veteran-to-Veteran Volunteer Program

Veteran Hospice Patients often find great comfort in talking to fellow Veterans who understand their unique experiences. Our Veteran Volunteers provide companionship, emotional support, and a special bond of understanding. Ways You Can Help:

• Provide emotional support for Veteran patients

Chaplain Volunteers – Spiritual & Emotional Support

Additional Volunteer Opportunities

Memorial Service Volunteers
Each November, Quad County Hospice holds an Annual Memorial Service to honor those who have passed. Volunteers help with:

• Addressing and mailing invitations
• Setting up and decorating for the event
• Serving refreshments
• Socializing with bereaved families

Care Blanket Volunteers

We provide every hospice patient with a handmade tie blanket and matching pillow, offering them warmth and comfort during their care. Volunteers can help by: 

• Making or donating handmade blankets
• Assisting with assembling and distributing blankets

Anyone can make a referral to Quad County Home Health, Hospice, or Medical Equipment services—whether you’re a physician, hospital, social worker, discharge planner, family member, friend, or the patient themselves. For home health, a skilled nurse will provide a free in-home assessment and work with the patient’s physician to develop a customized care plan. For hospice, our Patient Care Coordinator will review the referral, consult with the attending physician, and create a personalized care plan to meet the patient’s needs. For medical equipment, no physician referral is required for non-prescription items, making it easy for patients, families, and caregivers to get started.
