Sleep Studies at Pana Community Hospital

Your Path to Better Sleep and Improved Health

Sleep is an essential part of your overall health and well-being. At Pana Community Hospital, we offer comprehensive sleep studies to help diagnose and treat sleep disorders that may be impacting your daily life. Our state-of-the-art sleep lab and expert team are here to guide you on your journey toward better rest and health.

What Are Sleep Studies?

A sleep study, also known as polysomnography, is a non-invasive diagnostic procedure used to monitor your sleep patterns and detect potential sleep disorders. By analyzing data collected during your sleep, our specialists can determine what may be causing disturbances in your rest.

What Does a Sleep Study Entail?

During your sleep study at Pana Community Hospital, you’ll stay in a comfortable and private room equipped with everything you need to relax. Our sleep lab technicians will attach sensors to monitor:

  • Brain activity (EEG)
  • Eye movements
  • Heart rate and rhythm
  • Breathing patterns
  • Oxygen levels
  • Muscle activity

These sensors allow us to gather a comprehensive picture of your sleep health, which is then analyzed by our sleep specialists to determine a diagnosis.

The Importance of Treating Sleep Disorders

Sleep disorders don’t just affect your sleep; they can impact your entire quality of life, including your physical and mental health. At Pana Community Hospital, our goal is to help you understand the root cause of your sleep issues and develop an effective treatment plan.

Home Sleep Apnea Testing (HSAT)

Home sleep apnea testing (HSAT) is a medical assessment that can help diagnose obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in some adults. HSAT is a self-administered test that involves wearing sensors and an elastic belt while sleeping to record breathing, blood oxygen levels, and pulse.

HSAT can be used as an alternative to in-laboratory polysomnography for patients who meet certain criteria, such as:

  • Having signs and symptoms of moderate to severe OSA

  • Having an uncomplicated medical history

  • Complaining of snoring, with or without excessive daytime sleepiness

However, HSAT is not suitable for everyone and should not be used for general screening. A medical professional should review the patient's medical history and perform a face-to-face exam before ordering an HSAT. A board-certified sleep medicine physician should also review and interpret the raw data from the HSAT device.

HSAT may not be recommended for patients with: Neuromuscular disease or respiratory muscle weakness, Significant cardiopulmonary diseases, Chronic opioid use, History of stroke, and Comorbid non-respiratory sleep disorders.
