The Checkup

Nov 4, 2025

When it comes to women’s health, preventive care is one of the best gifts you can give yourself. Routine screenings are designed to catch potential issues early — often before you notice symptoms. Yet many women put off scheduling these important appointments due to busy schedules, uncertainty about when they’re needed, or simply not knowing what’s recommended.

At Pana Community Hospital, our women’s health providers are here to guide you through which screenings you need, when you need them, and why they matter.

Why Screenings Are So Important

  • Early detection saves lives. Many conditions, including breast and cervical cancer, are most treatable when caught early.
  • Prevention is powerful. Screenings can help identify risk factors before they turn into serious concerns.
  • Peace of mind matters. Staying up to date can help you feel confident and in control of your health.

Key Screenings for Women

1. Pap Test & HPV Screening

  • When: Starting at age 21, every 3 years (or longer with HPV testing after age 30) until the age of 65  unless results are abnormal.
  • Why: Detects early changes in cervical cells that could become cancerous.

2. Mammogram

  • When: Annually beginning at age 40 for most women. If you’re at higher risk, you may need to start sooner.
  • Why: Essential for early detection of breast cancer.

3. Bone Density Test (DEXA Scan)

  • When: At age 65, or earlier if you’re postmenopausal with risk factors.
  • Why: Checks for osteoporosis and fracture risk.

4. Cholesterol & Blood Pressure Checks

  • When: Starting in your 20s, with regular follow-ups as recommended.
  • Why: Key for protecting your heart health.

5. Colonoscopy

  • When: Starting at age 45, or earlier if you have risk factors.
  • Why: Screens for colorectal cancer and precancerous polyps.

6. Routine Women’s Health Exam

  • When: Annually.
  • Why: An opportunity to discuss menstrual health, menopause, mental health, and more.
