QC Hospice Seeks Veteran Volunteers

January 9th, 2018

Quad County Hospice “No Veteran Will Die Alone” program representatives were guest speakers at Taylorville’s VFW on December 11th. Tom Culberson RN, BSN , Director of Nursing for Quad County Home Health and Hospice,  presented a testimonial video of a hospice family’s experience and informed the group of the other services that Quad County has to offer such as music therapy, massage therapy, home health services, and durable medical equipment (DME).  Rachael Springate-Quad County Hospice Volunteer Coordinator, Mickey Clemons-Army Volunteer Veteran, Jack Moss-Navy Veteran and Chaplain for Vets presented information on what volunteer veterans can do for other veterans that are in Quad County Hospice care. Veteran volunteers visit patients and provide a companionship that can be built on from the military background. This military bond gives the patient a way to talk about what he/she has experienced during duty with another veteran.  Volunteers can also be a part of a pinning ceremony which is a wonderful honor to give our veterans especially ones that are in hospice care. The ceremony is presented with an American flag, branch of service flag, moment of prayer, certificate of appreciation of service, veteran flag pin, and a formal salute.

Quad County Hospice “No Veteran Will Die Alone” program has currently achieved 3 out of a 4 stars. There are only 3 hospices in the Illiana area (Illinois and Indiana) that have reached a level of 4 stars.  Ways to reach these star levels include: helping veterans get VA benefits, replacing lost medals, giving a pinning ceremony of honor to a veteran in hospice, and being active in local Veteran community organizations.

Quad County Hospice currently has conducted 9 pinning ceremonies in our service area which includes Shelby, Christian, Fayette, and Montgomery counties. If you want to be a volunteer /volunteer veteran and to be a part of a team that goes the extra mile for our veterans please call Rachael Springate, Hospice Volunteer Coordinator Quad County Hospice, 8 Huber St Pana  217-562-6380.
